Four Eryri Orienteering Club members represented Wales at this years Senior Home International competition, held in the English Lake District over 27th & 28th September.

Anwen Hockley made her senior debut for the Welsh team, finishing as the top Welsh athlete and 9th overall in the under 20 category.

Anna Drinkwater placed 19th in the over 20 category, only 35 minutes behind the overall winner and securing valuable points for the Welsh team for the second year in a row.

Matthew Fortes was also making his debut for the senior Welsh team and he proved that his selection was well deserved, finishing 20th and also contributing towards the Welsh team score.

Samuel Drinkwater was competing for Wales for the third time and he finished in a steady 22nd place, just outside the point scorers.

Matthew and Samuel teamed up as part of the Welsh C team in the relay and after problems for the A and B teams they came through as the top Welsh team, finishing close behind Ireland.

Anna and Anwen both ran well in the relay to help their teams pick up more points, but despite this Wales narrowly lost out to Ireland in the battle for the Celtic Cup.

Also in action over the weekend were Evie Hughes, Grace Hughes and Marty Jones, all representing Wales in the Junior Inter-Regional Championships.

Grace and Evie continued to build on their previous junior successes, finishing in 21st place in the under 14 and under 16 races respectively. After great relay runs the following day they are already well established as rising stars of the Welsh Junior Squad.

Marty performed very well on his first international appearance, finishing 31st against the strongest competitors in the UK. This is a fantastic achievement for the young athlete who has truly earned his international call up, thanks to years of persistence and dedication.

Many thanks to the event organisers from SROC and LOC and to all our hosts in the North-West Orienteering Association.
